DEFINITIONS

A disaster is a sudden, unplanned calamitous event causing great damage or loss.

Control is a process, device or procedure that
deters a threat from occurring,
mitigates the impact of a threat and
reduces the effect,
but cannot always prevent occurrence
.

A BIA (Business Impact Analysis) is a process designed to
document critical business functions and workflow,
determine the qualitative and quantitative impacts of a disruption,
prioritize and establish recovery time objectives,
identify resources required to recover and
document process interdependencies.

Financial impact is defined as
loss of sales or other revenue and/or
a reduction in cash flow due to billing, receivable and collections functions being affected and/or
inability of management to utilize working capital and/or
loss of customers and/or
reduced credit rating and/or
costs incurred to recover.

Customer impact issues may include
how quickly customers know you have a problem,
how worried they are about the problem,
what type of injury you could cause your customers by not being available,
what the likelihood is that they will take their business elsewhere,
what the potential is for a class action lawsuit,
what impact this will have on your reputation.

Possible operational impacts of a disaster include
the potential need to operate in manual mode for a significant period of time,
that information which is normally available at the touch of a button will require research and manual labor,
inefficiency,
the need for management to make vital decisions to carry the operation through the crisis.

Legal and regulatory impact may result from
regulations regarding the delivery of your goods or services,
regulators getting involved if you have an outage,
fines or penalties for not recovering quickly enough,
penalties resulting from the inability to fulfill the requirements of other contracts,
potential for law suits.

An area of refuge is a designated assembly location within a building.

The Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the maximum time permisible between the occurance of the disaster and the completed restoration of the functionality of each function.
